Do You Need Uninsured Motorist Coverage in Colorado?

Insurance Guides & Resources

AutoPublished November 2, 2026

I'm Cassondra Sells, owner of Sells Insurance in Arvada. I'm an independent broker, so my service is free to you (the insurance companies pay me), and I shop several carriers to find the right coverage for you. This is one of the coverages I ask every client about.

What UM/UIM covers

  • Uninsured motorist (UM): pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance.
  • Underinsured motorist (UIM): pays when the at-fault driver's limits are too low to cover your injuries.

Why I recommend people think hard before rejecting it

  • Your own health insurance may have deductibles, caps or networks.
  • Lost wages and pain and suffering aren't health insurance problems.
  • You don't get to choose who hits you.

How much UM/UIM should you carry?

Many people match their UM/UIM limits to their liability limits. That's a coverage decision, not a price question, and I'll walk through it with you.

Check your current policy

Look at your declarations page. If UM/UIM is missing or lower than your liability limits, let's talk. Get free quotes from several carriers on our auto page or call (720) 634-7497.
